Structure – The Value Chain
Create
a diagram that describes, explains and analyses the Value Chain within the
games industry. Include a profile of each sector.- Developers:
Developers are the production studios which create and
develop game titles. They offer a wide range of jobs, most of the creative job
roles are found within these companies. Developers can be independent or owned
by a publisher, some even form part of publisher groups. Projects are
commissioned by a publisher or initiated by a developer and sent to a publisher
for funding or take-up.
- Publishers:
Publishers are responsible for marketing, distributing,
promoting and usually financing games titles. They have a key influence on what
game gets made. Job roles tend to be in commissions, production management,
financial management, marketing, developer liaison, market research and product
strategy.
- Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers:
First Party Publishers are the companies that make the
hardware, like games consoles. They have a lot of power and influence over what
gets released and which titles get priority marketing. They provide support to
developers and publishers which work on their particular platforms
These companies decide whether or not to approve each game targeted for development on their respective console platforms. They can also control the entire production process as they can own development companies outright.
- · Outsourcing Companies
Outsourcing companies provide a variety of services including:
art, animation and design; rendering, graphics and physics engines and
programming; audio and sound design; and localization to developers and
publishers.
- · Press and Media
The press and media provide reviews, analysis and journalist
output for both trade and consumer and includes magazines, websites, and
television. Press and media coverage can affect the success or failure of a
game, just as it does for films.
